Lifestyle tips for sending the kids back to school – organized and stress-free

As the summer comes to an end, the fall season brings rushed mornings, packed lunches and a house of complete disarray. It's that time of year again...

We suggest starting preparation two weeks in advance. It will give you loads of time to be ready for the new school year and enjoy the rest of the summer holidays.

BEDROOMS

A place of rest and toys should be kept to minimum. If you include some of the following, clutter won’t hit the floor:
• Purchase a clothing organizer or have a customized one put it;
• Toss kids' worn-out clothes, and donate the ones that no longer fit;
• Keep clothing hangers all one colour; and
• Add some large hooks to the backs of bedroom doors for easy hanging of backpacks, hoodies, hats.

Sleep times will differ depending on the age of the child, some helpful guidelines below provided by WebMD:

  • 3-6 Years Old: 10-12 hours per day
  • 7-12 Years Old: 10 - 11 hours per day
  • 12-18 Years Old: 8-9 hours per day

BATHROOMS

Can be quite hectic if more than one child needs it. Start by making a schedule for showers/baths. Typically older children like to shower in the morning, so schedule younger children showers before bedtime. Here are some more helpful tips:
• Assign specific colour of towel for each child;
• Install pullout drawers for easy storage;
• Use wall space for shelves; and
• Hooks on the back of the door for towels/housecoats.

HOMEWORK AREA

Homework should be confined to one area in the house where they are able to focus on their homework only. It will help kids stay organized and keep homework confined to one area.
• Start by setting up an area in the kitchen or other space in the home (kids are more gravitated towards the kitchen);
• Stock up on pens, pencils, paper, calculators, etc. and make them easily accessible; and
• Set aside a time (roughly) every day for homework.

KITCHEN

The center of your home - the kitchen - should be organized by removing anything that doesn’t belong there, anything that doesn’t serve a purpose. Take 15 minutes a day at the end of the day to clean and organize and follow these helpful tips:
• Have a week-at-a-glance planner for time management;
• Use decorative bins and baskets;
• Label bins and baskets;
• Make lunches the night before and colour code for each child;
• Keep spare change handy: countless field trips, hot lunches, etc. throughout the year; and
• Use donation bins, garbage and recycling bins for easy disposal.
